Leeds is launching electric waste disposal with three eEconics.

Leeds, the capital of the West Yorkshire metropolitan region, is setting a strong example with environmentally friendly waste management. Three all-electric Mercedes-Benz eEconics are enhancing the municipal fleet – quiet, emission-free and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Electricity will now be replacing diesel. This significantly cuts annual CO₂ emissions and improves the air quality within the city.

Strong performance for the environment's sake.

Leeds City Council is expanding its fleet by adding three fully electric eEconics. Their task: disposing of waste efficiently and in a climate-friendly manner. Compared to diesel vehicles, the all electric models will significantly cut annual CO₂ emissions – and thus contribute to much better air quality in residential areas. At the same time, the vehicles' quiet operation helps reduce urban noise pollution.

The three vehicles were delivered by FAUN Zoeller UK – a long-standing partner in municipal waste disposal. With a volume of 22 m³, the Variopress bodies offer plenty of space for daily deployments. The eEconic 300 chassis with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 27 t serves as the basis. It is powered by the innovative eAxle with two powerful electric motors that operate quietly and provide plenty of power.

Proven partnership – now electric.

Leeds is very familiar with the Mercedes-Benz Econic. The vehicles have been an integral part of the municipal fleet for over 15 years. For John Woolmer, Chief Environmental Services Officer, the move to the all-electric model was therefore just a matter of course: “We  we were immediately interested when we heard that FAUN Zoeller and Mercedes-Benz Trucks were aiming to bring a fully electric waste collection truck onto the roads.”

The three eEconics fit perfectly into Leeds City Council's day-to-day operations. Every week, the city's staff empties more than 500,000 waste and recycling containers. The charging process? An overnight job. The batteries are charged at the Newmarket House depot so that the vehicles are ready for work again at 6 a.m. “Leeds is a pioneer in waste management powered by electromobility,” John Woolmer explains. “The three eEconic trucks are used specifically in city districts with the lowest air quality at present.”

Technology that impresses.

The Mercedes-Benz eEconic was developed for an electric drive from the ground up. Its e-axle saves space for the batteries, which, with a capacity of 336 kWh, delivering a range of up to 200 km. It charges with up to 160 kW – from 20% to 80% in just 75 minutes.

Occupational safety matters. The eEconic boasts comprehensive safety systems that support everyday operations. The cab offers a very good all-round view and the Multimedia Cockpit enables easy operation.

Econic and eEconic safety systems

A role model for environmentally friendly waste disposal.

“We are pleased that the first all-electric waste collection vehicles are now in use in Leeds,” city council member Mohammed Rafique comments. “They are an important step on our journey towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly service.” Leeds demonstrates: the future of municipal waste disposal is electric. And the Mercedes-Benz eEconic is ready for it.
