Strong as a team.

eEconic fleet paves the way for Karlsruhe's sustainable waste disposal concept.

Karlsruhe is setting a standard for future-oriented urban development – the expansion of the eEconic fleet and a holistic infrastructure concept from Mercedes-Benz Trucks enable the municipal waste disposal company ‘Team Sauberes Karlsruhe’ to efficiently and effectively combine reliability and environmental friendliness.

From test to standard.

‘Emma’ – that's the affectionate name given by the ‘Team Sauberes Karlsruhe’ (TSK) team to the first fully electric eEconic in their fleet. After a week of measuring consumption on the streets of Karlsruhe, it was clear that ‘Emma’ not only impresses with its proven vehicle concept, but also with its values. TSK now has seven eEconics in service – and plans to expand the fleet to a total of 18 vehicles.

A decision of this magnitude does not come out of the blue – because this is not TSK's first contact with the fully electric Mercedes-Benz truck. In the run-up to this, the makers in orange tested the practicality of the alternative drive system in waste collection operations for over a year using a test vehicle – and were impressed.

What makes the Karlsruhe project so special? In addition to the proven strengths of the eEconic, the tailor-made infrastructure concept developed by Mercedes-Benz Trucks eConsulting and S&G Automobil AG enables the best possible performance and utilisation of the vehicles within the Karlsruhe operation.

More circularity for Karlsruhe.

TSK keeps the city moving every day. Whether it's refuse collection, street cleaning or winter services, the approximately 540 employees ensure that the fan-shaped city remains clean and functional – all year round.

But that's not all: in addition to the targeted disposal of household and commercial waste, TSK also ensures that it is recycled in the best possible way. As experts in recycling management, the TSK team members are also committed to sharing their knowledge of resource-saving practices with the city's residents.

Economical in terms of electricity and noise.

The results of a year with the eEconic and the experiences with ‘Emma’ speak for themselves: the electric truck impresses not only with its comfortable operation, but also with the optimised working conditions guaranteed by its CO2-free drive system: hardly any noise, hardly any vibrations – just gentle, efficient waste collection.

Above all, however, the energy balance is impressive: on her daily route of around 80 km with around 60 stops, ‘Emma’ consumed only about 35% of her battery capacity.

Added to this are the proven features that make the Econic and eEconic efficient companions in everyday urban life: low entry and folding door for smooth operations, DirectVision panoramic windscreen for a wide view of traffic, and numerous safety assistants that can help protect all road users in the immediate vicinity of the eEconic.

The eEconic safety concept

Increased operating times, reduced costs.

At the heart of the Karlsruhe project is the precisely coordinated charging infrastructure, which was developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Trucks eConsulting and S&G Automobil AG to integrate the eEconic as seamlessly as possible into Karlsruhe's operations.

The depot's decentralised ‘satellite charging systems’ are equipped with two 400 kW power units, which supply a total of eight wall-mounted charging points with 100 kW each. This system ensures that TSK vehicles are ready for use at all times.

The sophisticated charging infrastructure ensures that the vehicles are charged as efficiently as possible. At the same time, it improves charging times and minimises electricity costs. An intelligent energy management system prevents voltage peaks in the power grid and prioritises charging processes according to the needs of individual vehicles. In the long term, a planned photovoltaic system will supply the vehicles with self-generated electricity.

Impressive results.

Besides these technical features, the Mercedes-Benz eEconic comes factory-fitted with three batteries, each with a capacity of 112 kWh, and a range of up to 100 km per charge1 when used in collective operation – more than enough for everyday use. The Multimedia Cockpit Interactive can provide all important information on battery status, energy consumption and remaining range in real time while driving. Thanks in part to this intelligent technology, the fleet can be steered through the streets with high efficiency.

In addition to this already remarkable environmental performance, each Mercedes-Benz eEconic saves around 24,3 t of CO₂ per year. This amounts to a total annual saving of around 170 t of CO₂ for Karlsruhe.

The team can count on strong support for the switch to environmentally friendly waste disposal with the eEconic: The purchase of the new vehicles is subsidised by the German Federal Ministry of Transport under the guideline for the promotion of light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drive systems and the associated refuelling and charging infrastructure (KsNI) with up to 80% of the eligible additional expenditure, up to a maximum of €1,980,602.60. NOW GmbH is supporting the programme, and the German Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility is approving the applications.

By 2035, the entire TSK fleet is to be converted to alternative drive systems – with the aim of reducing the city's CO₂ emissions to zero. Karlsruhe is thus sending a strong signal on the way to a cleaner and quieter city.

1 The range specified is provisional and was determined using an internal simulation tool based on optimal conditions, including 3 new battery packs after preconditioning in a partially loaded state in inner-city waste collection (VECTO Municipal Cycle up to 100 km) or mixed waste collection (combined from VECTO Municipal Cycle, VECTO Regional Delivery and VECTO Urban Delivery Cycle up to 150 km) at an outside temperature of 20 °C, and may differ from the values determined in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/2400. The actual range is highly dependent on driving behaviour, the application profile and the type of body, among other factors.
