From the trade fair to the machine park: new road-rail Unimog delivered at the InnoTrans.

The road-rail Unimog at the InnoTrans 2018 painted in vivid colours were real eye-catchers in more than just a visual sense. The innovative vehicle solutions also put a number of technical highlights on the road and rails. Their equipment features make the Unimog custom heroes in the industry-specific daily routine. Two operators were able to take delivery of their new vehicles at the InnoTrans in person: Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB) and Evers Umweltpflege Company from Bunde.

Road-rail Unimog with crewcab for Magdeburg's rails.

The first Unimog of the new generation with crewcab and conversion to road-rail vehicle was handed over to MVB at the trade fair. Managing Director Birgit Münster-Rendel accepted the symbolic vehicle key for the road-rail Unimog from Dr Ralf Forcher, Head of Marketing, Sales and Service at Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, and Andreas Angenstein, District Manager of Unimog general agent Ahlborn. "Thanks to state-of-the-art equipment and technology, the new Unimog will shorten the operating times and improve the working conditions for our employees at the same time", said a delighted Birgit Münster-Rendel.

Holger Doth, responsible for the segment of road-rail vehicles at Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks: "We are pleased that Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe continue to put their trust in the performance capability and versatility of the Unimog".

The Unimog U 423 is designed as an emergency vehicle for municipal transport companies and is equipped with a Zagro bogie rail guide for very tight curve radii, a crewcab from Kronenburg Company with room for up to seven people as well as a box body for transporting hydraulic rerailer equipment. The Unimog chassis was delivered ex-factory already with several body-specific chassis modifications by Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks (CTT) –  for example, with a wheelbase extended to 4,500 mm to prepare the vehicle for the extensive external body scopes.

Thanks to its torque converter clutch, the Unimog is also able to tow a tram in an emergency or handle shunting work at the depot. And because as a road-rail vehicle it is able to quickly switch between rail and road, it is a natural for operations at Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe and always quickly where it's needed when it counts.

The new Unimog will shorten the operating times and improve the working conditions at the same time.

Unimog to go.

One of the four Unimog road-rail exhibits will not even have to return home to Wörth: the brand-new Unimog U 430 with mower boom from Mulag. It also offers an innovation. Thanks to its digital height limitation as per EN 50128, the safety-relevant software of the railed vehicle now also meets the requirements of the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA).

Its numerous mounting options for vegetation management makes the Unimog U 430 a natural for Evers Company: The service provider's main areas of activity are growth control, green space maintenance and clearance cutting. Thanks to the EasyDrive hydrostatic traction drive, employees can always operate the Unimog at the optimal working speed, especially in the time-consuming maintenance of vegetation. Safety was also considered: The engine compartment is equipped with a fire alarm and a fire suppression system with a fire safety certificate of TÜV Süd Rail.

Lots to see at Mercedes-Benz on the trade fair stand:
