AIRPORT IN JAKARTA USES ROAD-RAIL UNIMOG ON SPECIAL RAIL AS RESCUE VEHICLE.
A lot goes on every day at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia. It handles around 100 flights per hour. Each year, 54 million passengers have to be shuttled quickly and safely between the three giant terminals and the airport’s train stations. This mega-airport relies on an automated guideway transport system called Skytrain and on a special rescue vehicle that works on the rails: the road-rail Unimog U 423.
EXPERTISE FROM BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG.
The airport's 3.05 km Skytrain route is referred to as an automated people mover system. Each train can carry 176 passengers and they leave at five-minute intervals. A unique feature of the three two-carriage trains is that they run on rubber tyres. This innovative technology placed additional special demands on the rescue vehicle required for this application – and the perfect solution was found in Baden-Württemberg: The vehicle chosen was a Unimog U 423 specially converted by the ZAGRO Group.
THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR ANY SPECIAL CASE.
The ZAGRO Group, based in Bad Rappenau-Grombach, Germany, is known worldwide for its expertise in the field of special road-rail vehicles. The road-rail Unimog is equipped as standard with a hydraulically lowerable rail guide, which allows it to travel on both tracks and roads.
However, this project posed a different challenge. The Skytrain route does not have metal rails like ordinary railway tracks. The trains run on rubber tyres and are steered by a lateral guide rail, so a special solution had to be found.
The ZAGRO Group converted the Unimog U 423 specifically for the needs of the Kalayang airport depot and equipped it with special technical features. Guide rails have been fitted to both sides of the vehicle and additional rear axle steering has been installed. Automatic coupling rods were added at the front and rear.
THE SPECIAL RAIL RESCUE VEHICLE.
The Mercedes-Benz Special Truck is ideal for these conversions and the modifications turn the special rail rescue vehicle into one that is perfectly adapted for the Skytrain route. The Unimog U 423 also has space for up to four people in its air-conditioned crewcab and ample stowage space for rescue equipment.
IN RESCUE OPERATIONS, RELIABILITY, SAFETY AND SPEED ARE EVERYTHING.
Moritz Engelhardt, Project Manager, ZAGRO Group
Everything is in the right place – thanks to ZAGRO, the truck navigates the rails flawlessly and every move made by rescue personnel is perfect. And Moritz Engelhardt, Project Manager at ZAGRO, explains how the two go hand in hand: "In rescue operations, reliability, safety and speed are everything. That is precisely why the operators of the Skytrain route opted for the ZAGRO Unimog U 423 rescue vehicle".
INNOVATIVE, CUSTOMISED, RELIABLE.
The high demands placed on this special Unimog are also reflected by the unrivalled range of modern rescue technology with which it is equipped: search lights, chassis and surround lighting and multiple camera systems on the rail chassis and at the rear of the truck ensure impeccable safety in all operations. The well-thought-out lighting and safety concept ensures fast and efficient response times during rescue operations. Indonesia’s mega-airport can truly rely on its rescue shuttle from southern Germany one hundred percent every day.
