To the end of the world.

The municipality of Juan Fernández gets its first Unimog.

The Juan Fernández archipelago is located 600 km off mainland Chile. It is a region where nature calls the shots, far away from external help. As a result, islanders have had to battle the elements alone... until now. A true off-road pro has arrived to help: the Unimog U 5000 is the municipality's very first fire-fighting vehicle. It's a historic milestone.

One which has made rapid aid a reality.

It’s a picture book landscape, but also logistically challenging for rescue workers. The islands of the municipality of Juan Fernández are characterised by their dense vegetation. But a lot of greenery also means a lot of tinder. Exposed to strong Pacific winds, the islands are extremely vulnerable to potentially devastating fires.

And to make things even harder, they are located around 600 km off mainland Chile. If there's an emergency out here, there's no help from neighbouring communities to rely on. In addition, the Archipiélago de Juan Fernández National Park has been designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, meaning that extreme caution must be taken in emergency situations in order not to endanger the sensitive, local biodiversity. This requires rescue workers who know every inch of the challenging terrain. And a vehicle that supports them uncompromisingly.

Mettle in the vanguard.

Until 2026, Juan Fernández did not have an official fire engine, and the municipality wasn't able to establish a traditional fire brigade either. When a fire broke out, it was the employees of the municipality and the local power plant who fought the flames.

Their equipment? Whatever they could get their hands on. With garden hoses, hand-held fire extinguishers and simple water buckets, a handful of volunteers, often only six people on the day shift and four at night, fought against the forces of nature. It was a heroic but highly dangerous feat that really highlighted the need for professional reinforcements.

Cue the all-rounder.

Mónica Fernández, Head of Urban Construction, took the initiative. She submitted the official application to the mayor for the procurement of a suitable emergency vehicle. A challenging period of public tenders and acquiring licenses followed

before the perfect vehicle for the job was purchased: the Unimog U 5000. Sales partner Kaufmann helped get the all-rounder on wheels out to the islands. It has everything needed to tackle Juan Fernández's rough terrain: ground clearance, fording capability and the necessary robustness to extinguish fires far from the beaten track.

A vehicle as the foundation for a fire service.

The arrival of the Unimog is much more than just a technical upgrade for the municipality: this vehicle is a real catalyst for this archipelago municipality. Although on paper, Juan Fernández’s official fire service is still in the founding phase, the Unimog has given the residents fresh resolve to get it off the ground.

Whether the challenge be dense vegetation, rough terrain or stormy winds: in future, when the alarm sounds on Juan Fernández, rescue workers will no longer have to make do with buckets. Instead, they'll be able to count on a top-class powerhouse bearing the Mercedes star. The Unimog is officially ready for water!
