Sophisticated fire protection.

Arocs 3253 L with STINGER high reach extendable turret providing support at VARO refinery in Cressier.

Leave nothing to chance wherever there's fuel. On the 74 ha site of the VARO refinery in Cressier, Switzerland, the demands on people and machines alike are high. When the alarm sounds, every second counts. This is precisely where the Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3253 L comes in as a four-axle, special fire-fighting vehicle.

A giant that makes itself small.

A refinery is a maze of pipes, boilers and narrow paths. When there's an emergency here, a vehicle is needed that can transport large quantities of water and foam, but still remains manoeuvrable. “Many fire-fighting vehicles with a similar power spectrum are simply too large to be able to manoeuvre within the refinery”, explains Marcel Streich, CEO of fire service equipment manufacturer Rosenbauer Schweiz.

The Arocs 3253 L solves this contradiction. It not only has the compact dimensions, but also the stability required for the heavy-duty special body. “In any case, very few truck chassis are suitable for this special body,” says Marcel Streich.

Technology that protects.

In the event of an emergency, a large amount of extinguishing agent must be applied in the shortest possible time. For this purpose, the Arocs chassis has been upgraded with the modular technology (MT) design, as this allows the vehicle to be adapted to the special requirements. Powerful pumps and large cannons pose a challenge for the chassis - but the powerful Arocs is one of the few trucks that can cope with this gigantic task.

One highlight of the vehicle is its mechanical rescue equipment on the roof: the STINGER high reach extendable turret. This turret developed by Rosenbauer is being used at Cressier for the first time in Switzerland outside an airport operation.

The performance data of the STINGER is like something from an action film: it can fight flames from a height of 20 m  and over a distance of up to 90 m. With its 360° endless rotation range, it offers emergency services special flexibility from any position. Combined with the high output of up to 6,000 litres of extinguishing agent per minute and an integrated foam system, the Arocs therefore becomes an important, on-site firefighter.

Strong partners for extreme projects.

Vehicles like this don't just appear ready-made. “Preparing the Arocs chassis for this body is a unique process”, says Andreas Hauser, Product Manager at Daimler Truck Schweiz AG. Of around 30 to 35 chassis delivered annually for fire service bodies, only four to five fall into the heavy-duty truck segment, such as this Arocs 3253 L.

For the VARO refinery, which already has four other Mercedes-Benz fire trucks in operation on its premises, the new Arocs represents a decisive improvement in safety. Fire brigade commander Sébastien Wicht explains the partnership in a nutshell: “Rosenbauer is the only fire service equipment supplier in Switzerland that was able to meet our stringent requirements.”

Combined with the proven Mercedes-Benz chassis and reliable maintenance by Pierre Steulet SA, the team in Cressier is now prepared for any emergency. A highly complex project. A strong team. And a truck that delivers the goods when it really gets tough.
