Working at Radiolink sometimes involves battling utterly brutal conditions. Storms, temperatures ranging from scorching to freezing – it's part of Roberto Vargas' everyday life. You may be asking yourself the question: why does he do it?
“What drives me and my team is the love of a challenge”, says Roberto Vargas, “the passion for conquering a summit and using state-of-the-art equipment where there had previously been nothing there.” But extreme missions like those undertaken by Radiolink also require extreme tools.
If the Unimog can't do it,
no vehicle can do it.
Roberto Vargas, Owner, Radiolink
“Better value for money than a helicopter.”
For years, the team fought through the difficult terrain with quads, off-road buggies and snowmobiles. But with these machines, Radiolink was constantly struggling against the limits of what was possible. When they decided to buy a Unimog U 4000, all of that changed. The off-road vehicle was delivered by the Unimog general distributor Kaufmann. And it was ready to go right away.
For Roberto, choosing to buy this vehicle was a no-brainer: “more versatile than a standard all-wheel drive truck, better value for money than a helicopter.” With a wheelbase of 3,850 mm, 385 mm ground clearance and an approach/departure angle of up to 44°, the Unimog U 4000 conquers slopes on which other vehicles fail. The engageable all-wheel drive, tyre pressure control system and portal axles ensure maximum grip on loose surfaces.
The 4.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine developing 160 kW (218 hp) delivers the necessary power to transport heavy equipment even through deep mud and along narrow mountain tracks. Generators, fuel, control cabinets, batteries, high-tech equipment – the Unimog is now reliably transporting all of this to the remotest locations. And that's not all.
Dual use as a logistics and rescue vehicle.
Radiolink equipped the Unimog with a cable winch, powerful lighting and state-of-the-art radio technology, meaning that it can be used not only as a transport vehicle, but also as a rescue vehicle and mobile operations centre. When it comes to building solar parks or transporting materials for mobile phone masts on inaccessible terrain, for Roberto Vargas, the Unimog is the best vehicle out there.
The “Salta Del Agua” downhill event showed that the Unimog is also a fantastic vehicle for carrying out completely different tasks. Here, the all-rounder brought the mountain bikers to the start – along routes that no other vehicle would have mastered, yet again showcasing how it does nothing better than overcoming limits.
Unimog: “The king of machines”.
For Roberto, one thing is clear: the Unimog is the best tool he has ever had, it's the “king of machines”. "When we bought it, we said that if the Unimog can't do it, no other vehicle can do it." And this theory has proven itself to be true. Today, there is hardly any place that Radiolink can't get to.
Roberto Vargas was also impressed by the cooperation with Kaufmann. From day one, the team was on hand to provide advice, practical support, technical instructions and valuable tips. “I am absolutely delighted with the performance and reliability of this terrific universal vehicle – not to mention the opportunities it opens up for my business”, says Roberto.
