Universal, indispensable, Unimog.
With the Unimog U 5023, the Lünen fire service can take on any challenge.

The Unimog U 5023 ensures optimum responsiveness and flexibility in an emergency. In order to meet the many challenges the landscape throws at them, the fire service relies on vehicles that prove their mettle in extreme situations. With an increasing number of deployments requiring an offroad vehicle, the Unimog is the first choice for any task.

Well-rounded assistance for all kinds of cities.

Lünen an der Lippe is a vibrant link between the industrialised Ruhr region and the picturesque landscapes of Münsterland – it's a city with a population of 88,000 and plenty of character to boot. The tasks taken on by the fire service here include urban fire-fighting, flood rescue, and even missions at the local mines. An eclectic mix, which requires a fair share of flexibility. To be prepared for all eventualities, the fire service is as diverse as the town it serves.

In Lünen, there is a professional department with around 120 employees and seven volunteer units in different districts, which together have a total of around 230 members. There are also special units for NBC defence, logistics and drone operations. The Equipment and Technology department led by Robin Möller always keeps its finger on the pulse. For Robin, optimally equipped vehicles are essential for their daily work.

Due to the prolonged droughts experienced in recent summers, the focus in Lünen is increasingly on forest fire fighting, as is the case globally. But then there's the other extreme too: heavy rainfall events are also increasingly leading to flooding in the town. Rescuing people in flooded districts therefore constitutes a further integral part of the spectrum of operations. Because of all this, a vehicle that is built for extreme pressures and equipped for all eventualities is required. For Robin Möller, it quickly became clear that only the extreme off-road Unimog would do.

Competence creates trust.

The Lünen fire service has been a long-standing user of the Unimog – for many years, the Unimog U 1550L has been indispensable for the fire service in its battles against vegetation fires. And the introduction of the Unimog U 5023 to the team does not mean that its older comrade will be headed for retirement. Instead, it will be modernised before going straight back out to work.

Aside from for sentimental reasons, there are also some key operational reasons behind the maintenance of the older Special Truck. Robin Möller explains: “In recent years in particular, we have noticed that the range of applications is increasingly shifting towards vegetation fires, floods and disaster protection. It wouldn't make sense to discontinue use of such a fantastic vehicle – especially when it's still in great shape.”

Simplicity meets cutting-edge technology.

It cannot be denied that the Lünen fire service loves the Unimog U 1550L – but it's also really excited about the Unimog U 5023 joining the team too. The flexible platform of this offroad pro has been perfectly rounded off by a Schlingmann TLF 3000 VARUS tanker body. In addition to a capacity of 3,100 l of water, it also features a roof water jet and front spray bar for vehicle protection.

Recent years have shown that the dangers we are having to face are getting more and more varied in nature. The Unimog is the vehicle we need to overcome them.

Robin Möller, Head of Equipment and Technology, Lünen Fire Department

The special truck has been equipped with a forest fire module and a highly efficient power generator, making the Unimog a true all-rounder. Whether fighting fires in hard-to-reach areas or providing assistance on flooded roads, its strengths are plain to see. Its versatility allows emergency responders to act quickly and effectively to a wide range of situations.

Now, the Lünen fire service can't imagine life without the Unimog. Its performance in demanding situations, coupled with its ease of use and robustness, make it indispensable in extreme situations. Technical superiority, simplicity, safety – all of these things are absolutely essential in deployment, and all are part of the Unimog's DNA. This vehicle really can tackle anything.
