carrying responsibility.

The Unimog implement carrier safety concept.

When it comes to staying safe when out on the road and in municipal operations, every second counts. The Unimog implement carrier vehicle concept is designed to significantly reduce the risks in these seconds and to avoid serious traffic accidents as far as possible. Comprehensive assistance systems also help offer the best possible protection  both for the driver and other road users.

Safety takes shape: the Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicle concept is the cumulation of decades of experience and professional expertise – from the view from the cab to the power distribution when braking.

After all, in day-to-day road operations, it's not just about doing a good job, it's also about doing a good job safely. And the engineers at Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks have written this into the Unimog’s DNA.

Staying in lane.

Whether on dry, wet or icy carriageways – when full braking is required, a short and controllable braking distance is essential. Steerability should always be ensured on a wide variety of surfaces. After all, you will only be able to evade a collision if you can steer when braking. Controlled braking behaviour increases safety for everyone involved in the traffic situation.

Practice makes perfect: Driving safety training with Unimog and ADAC

Not even emergency braking can throw the Mercedes-Benz Unimog out of its lane. This is down to the dual-circuit service brake system with disc brakes on all wheels. The four-channel ABS also helps the driver to maintain control of the steering wheel in dangerous situations. The balanced axle-load ratio helps ensure that the Unimog's driving characteristics remain stable when cornering, especially on slippery carriageways. Even when fully loaded, the implement carrier always stays in its lane.

With the automatic load-dependent brake (ALB), the braking force on the Unimog is automatically distributed between the front and rear axles, depending on the load. This keeps the vehicle balanced. In cold, wet weather, a heated air dryer protects the brake system. And with the standard ABS socket, safety is also guaranteed when towing a trailer.

Safety always in mind.

The short front-end dimension is yet another feature of the Unimog's safety-centric design. Even with a large number of front-mounted implements, the Unimog falls below the legally prescribed limit of 3.50 m. This gives its drivers a better view in intersection and junction situations even without technical aids.

The open-view cab has a large panoramic window and five mirrors all round. Together with the optionally available glazed mowing door, this creates an ideal view of the implements. With the VarioPilot® transferable steering, drivers can move the steering wheel to the other side in a matter of seconds. This enables precise, controlled – and safe – work, even when there is only one person working.

Protection and comfort combined.

With its reinforcements in the underbody and installed tubular brackets, the Unimog cab fully complies with the European standard ECE-R29/3 for cab strength. But that's not all: the 2.40 m-long platform also ensures outstanding impact resistance. Three-point seat belts and integrated head restraints add the finishing touches to this very comprehensive protection package.

All this without compromising on comfort. The 4-point cab suspension, air-sprung seat and fully suspended chassis significantly reduce vibrations – and protect the driver's back and head, especially in winter service or during long assignments. After all, fewer distractions mean better concentration on the task at hand.

Stay comfortable when the weather gets extreme.

In winter, road conditions can change at lightning speed. That's why it's essential to be able to react to freshly fallen or compacted snow as quickly as possible, and to be able to brake in a controlled manner when driving in such conditions. This can be a challenge – especially if only one person is driving the vehicle alone.

But the Unimog is well-equipped to tackle these conditions too! Usually, it doesn't take long for even just one person to fit snow chains to Unimog wheels of the same size. Alternatively, automatic tyre chains can be pre-installed on the Unimog. These can be activated at the push of a button – directly and conveniently from the driver’s seat.

Relief meets responsibility.

The assistance systems in the Unimog also precisely follow the objectives of the overall safety concept: to relieve the strain on the driver and protect other road users. Some of the systems even go above and beyond the requirements of the European General Safety Regulation, which has been in force since July 2024.

The Unimog meets the standards of the European General Safety Regulation (GSR).

For example, Sideguard Assist 2 assists when turning off and changing lanes, and Frontguard Assist supports the driver when moving off and in complex situations. The reversing camera is automatically activated when reverse gear is engaged and sends live images to the driver on a monitor.

General Safety Regulation: The Unimog is the leader of the pack.

The tyre pressure assistant monitors the condition of all tyres in real time – both on the tractor vehicle and on the semitrailer or trailer. Traffic Sign Assist detects speed limits and no-entry signs at an early stage, while Attention Assist can analyse driving behaviour and warn of signs of drowsiness. In addition, the Unimog is equipped ex works with a standardised interface for a breathalyser, which is automatically connected to the immobiliser.

However, the Unimog safety concept goes far beyond its carefully thought-out design and sophisticated sensor system: it's a daily interplay of design, suspension and handling, which drivers can rely on in municipal and commercial road operations. To protect themselves and those around them.
