Lewisham’s market force.

Not a big deal for a professional: Econic with electric tipper body compresses refuse.

In the Lewisham district of London, Noel Everest sets great value on environmentally friendly and quiet refuse collection. The local marketplace is often busy, which is why the Service Group Manager of the urban fleet management does not compromise on safety and reliability. He does not have to. Because the electric tipper and crusher body of the Mercedes-Benz Econic 1838 4x2 collects and compresses the accumulated refuse without any noise and emissions - and thrills local residents and the urban fleet management alike.

Mobile waste compactor with plug-in.

Lewisham Town Council bought their first Econic in 2013. A stroke of luck: Today, they rely exclusively on Econic vehicles in their fleet - which consists of around 40 trucks by now. The new member was acquired specifically for the thriving market district in the heart of Lewisham. From early morning until late in the evening, the Econic works there six days a week as a mobile waste compactor for the large amounts of waste produced on the site every day - while residents, market suppliers and visitors only notice the radiant blue of the Special Truck.

The Econic combines high performance with first-class reliability and an outstanding total cost of ownership record that outperforms all competitors.

Looking for an innovative rear loader tipper body, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks located a suitable product from the Dutch waste disposal specialist Geesinknorba: The entire body is driven electrically, including the collection container and the tipper. The clou: While conventional disposal vehicles rely on their diesel engines for the use of the body, the Econic's Euro VI diesel engine can be switched off when lifting the bins and compacting the waste, thanks to the electric hydraulic operation. Thus, the engine runs only while driving along the collection route and to the depot, where the plug-in battery pack is charged overnight.

"The Econic combines high performance with first-class reliability and an outstanding total cost of ownership record that outperforms all competitors," praises Noel Everest. And the high safety standards and good visibility that characterise the Econic are playing a major role, too.

Benchmark in terms of safety and visibility.

With its low-profile high-visibility cab with outstanding all-round visibility, the Econic sets groundbreaking safety standards. Thanks to its high and wide-opening driver's door, the large panoramic glazing of the front and side windows and the sophisticated mirror and camera system to reduce the blind spot, the Special Truck is a reliable specialist.

A promising concept: The topic of road safety is moving further into focus at authoritative level, too. From 2020, London's "Direct Vision Standards" directive will apply. When entering or operating in the urban area, all trucks over 12 tonnes will have to hold a safety permit and will be rated on the basis of a 5-star system. Noel Everest feels confident: The new Econic is going to receive the maximum score.
