Fresh on the table.

Twelve Unimog trucks secure transport logistics at Mählmann Gemüsebau.

Whether a side salad on Helgoland, rocket on a pizza in Frankfurt or a cauliflower bake in Friedrichshafen: there's a high probability that most people in Germany have already eaten vegetables from Mählmann Gemüsebau. In 1983, Wolfgang Mählmann took over his parents' farm after passing his farming master craftsman exams. After three years of breeding livestock with 30 pigs, 10 cows and 50 chickens, Wolfgang Mählmann stopped keeping livestock in 1984. Since then, the Mählmann farm in the Oldenburg Münsterland region only grows vegetables.

Green thumbs, green Unimog.

Today, the family-run business cultivates over 30 vegetable crops, ranging from cauliflower and iceberg lettuce to broccoli and radishes. Mählmann Gemüsebau harvests the crops just-in-time and is also active 24 hours a day, 365 days in the year ensuring deliveries get to the company's customers all over Europe.

It should come as no surprise that the colour chosen to represent the company was grass green. Or more precisely: RAL 6010. And the farm's three brand-new Unimog U 427 models, which the Unimog general distributor recently handed over to the company, are also painted in this colour. The Unimog has been in use at Mählmann since 2004 – much to the delight of Workshop and Fleet Manager Marius Vaske. Since 2008 he has been looking after the welfare of the Unimog trucks at the farm: "The three new identical models are numbers 10, 11 and 12 at the company."

There is no vehicle that is more suitable than the Unimog for our journeys from the field to the farmyard or to the Langförden wholesale market near Vechta.

On the way in the field and on the road.

The equipment of the agricultural implement carriers is functional and leaves nothing to be desired. On-board, drivers will find everything they need for working in the fields and driving on the roads: high-traction tyres, agricultural platform body, coupling jaw, hydraulic system for trailers and a neatly equipped cab with air conditioning and "particularly comfortable seat", as Marius Vaske emphasises. And that's an important factor as the Unimog vehicles are used in transport logistics. Sometimes they can travel up to 50 kilometres from the company premises to the field and back.

Schelling Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH

The daily distances that the vehicles have to cover are the crucial aspect which led the agricultural specialists to opt in favour of the Unimog a long time ago already: "There is no vehicle that is more suitable than the Unimog for our journeys from the field to the farmyard or to the Langförden wholesale market near Vechta," says Vaske. He also affirms that the Unimog is an impressive choice in terms of speed, reliability, fuel consumption and tyre wear. "No other vehicle can serve us more efficiently."

Investment for the future.

And let's be honest about one thing: the company doesn't handle the vehicles with velvet gloves: the Unimog vehicles are used to tow loads of up to 18 tonnes! Tarp trailers or refrigerated box bodies are transported in and around the Oldenburg Münsterland area from April to November, which corresponds to around 2000 operating hours per Unimog. Plus, they remain in service for between ten and twelve years before being replaced by new models.
