Silence is golden.

Autobahn GmbH testing eActros as electric truck for winter service operations.

An almost silent heavy-duty, truck equipped with a snow plough? Yes, we can do that. The eActros 400, equipped as an electric winter service vehicle, is getting to work on Germany's A9 motorway near Münchberg. The locally CO₂-free truck from Daimler Truck clears snow off the road, grits and leads the pack. Germany's motorway operator, Autobahn GmbH, is testing how the all-electric truck performs in challenging winter service  and the company is gathering valuable information in the process.

A pilot project on the A9 motorway.

The asphalt on the A9 is completely iced over. In the distance, an orange dot charges along through the grey winter scene on the horizon. But there's no engine hum as the heavy-duty truck steadily and vigorously moves the massive snow plough along the recently fallen snow on the road.

Daimler Truck's eActros is in action – a fully electric winter service vehicle on the A9 motorway near Münchberg – it's an integral part of the fleet, fully equipped with an electric gritter and plough.

It's the culmination of a pilot project that sets standards.

Full charge, full power.

The eActros 400 is not patrolling along the A9 motorway as a showcase vehicle, but operating as a genuine part of winter service operations. As part of the joint “eTruck in real-world test” pilot project, it is providing Autobahn GmbH and Daimler Truck with valuable data – on power consumption, handling and suitability for everyday use. Systems installed in the truck generally gather any relevant data automatically. It's a project on equal footing with a clear objective: contributing to an emission-free fleet without sacrificing on performance.

And its performance is impressive. “The vehicle has proven itself with flying colours in winter service operations,” says Mathias Graupner, heading up the project for the Road Service Technology Competence Centre [Kompetenzzentrum Straßenbetriebsdienst Technik] at Autobahn GmbH. The cooperation with Daimler Truck has been consistently positive, and drivers' enthusiasm speaks for itself: “We all noticed how they returned with twinkling eyes,” the project manager adds.

Technology defies temperature.

The three-axle vehicle comes with everything a cutting-edge winter service vehicle needs: it's 4 metres wide, features an electrohydraulically controlled snowplough made of impact-resistant polyethylene integrated into a steel frame, all to reliably clear snow and ice from the carriageway. The combined scraper strip used in the test comprises a flexible neoprene strip for sensitive surfaces with an engageable steel scraper strip for compacted snow.

Behind the cab, the vehicle boasts the Icebear VP360e – a fully electric spreader with capacity for 2,640 litres of brine and 6 m³ of grit and salt. The spreader operates autonomously: plug-and-play capability, powered by its own 48 V battery system, ensuring short charging times (only takes 20 minutes to charge to 80%) and thus guaranteeing high levels of autonomy. The screw conveyor system also provides for accurate dosing.

Driving becomes "gliding".

The eActros achieves a range of up to 400 km with an installed battery capacity of 448 kWh. This allows it to cover up to three trips per 8-hour shift. Then it's time for charging. During shifts, the e-truck copes well, even at icy temperatures: “the battery was not the limiting factor,” Mathias Graupner explains.

For Mathias Graupner, the most notable difference from a diesel truck starts in the driver’s cab. “As soon as you power up, you notice that it is completely silent,” the project manager says, adding “the vehicle glides along rather than stuttering like a diesel would”. Thanks to these properties, there's much greater awareness of any ambient noise and the vehicle’s handling.

And all this while delivering the performance staff are used to. After all, “it's ready to go as soon as you step on the gas,” the staff member at Autobahn GmbH clarifies.

The eActros remains part of a pilot project for now. But the possibilities are almost endless, as the all-electric truck would also be ideal for use in summer, as Mathias Graupner emphasises. With its robust design, vast range, electrically powered control of all functions and flexibility in terms of its body, the vehicle is ideal for municipal applications such as mowing or cleaning duties. Essentially, wherever cost-effectiveness, reliability and environmental friendliness are crucial.
