Grüezi, Unimog!

Thurgau's cantonal civil engineering agency uses the Unimog U 423 to keep its roads in check.

Mowing, ploughing, spreading: tasks as if made for a Unimog. No wonder then, that Thurgau's cantonal civil engineering agency puts its trust in an all-wheel drive Unimog U 423 – for all of its tasks, in all seasons.

The Swiss-based company based in Frauenfeld Thurgau has around 130 employees which maintain, plan, build and run the 800 km of regional road network, and thus all make a contribution towards road safety in the region. Major assistance towards this aim comes from their new all-rounder from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, as Daniel Goldinger, Head of the Vehicles and Machinery Department, explains.

Mercedes-Benz plays an important role in our everyday work because without a first-class fleet, we wouldn't be able to meet the high demands placed upon us.

Modern, efficient and safe – typically Unimog.

But the Unimog U 423 isn't the first operational vehicle with a three-pointed star which the cantonal civil engineering agency puts its faith in, but it is the first Unimog in the fleet. Daniel Goldinger firmly believes that the new Unimog is a valuable aid for their team – thanks to an operating concept familiar from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles, drivers quickly become acquainted with the vehicle. With the latest technology on-board, the Unimog allows tasks to be completed with great efficiency. And as it's a genuine all-rounder, its scope of possible applications is phenomenally broad.

A highlight in all four seasons: the Unimog U 423.

Whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter, the Unimog tackles every challenge which comes its way, any time and to the user's utmost satisfaction. Mowing along the region's roads, ploughing snow or spreading salt are just some of the tasks in which it is already versed. "VarioPilot® gives you the option of moving the steering wheel to the right-hand side ready for mowing operations. This simplifies the driver's workload enormously. And with a salt spreader mounted directly onto the ball points of the Unimog, we have the maximum payload available to us, meaning we can carry plenty of salt during the winter months," as Daniel Goldinger excitedly explains.

The Mulag FME 600 verge mower equipped with the Mähtronic system has a lot to offer, including very high working speeds – and all coupled with a reach of up to 7.40 metres.
To ensure the necessary visibility and safety, the Unimog is equipped with a panoramic cab and windscreen. An unhindered view is absolutely essential, especially during winter service operations, as that's the only way to ensure that the 3.60-metre-wide ZAUGG G50K snowplough can be safely manoeuvred through the snowdrifts.

Quality and good collaboration go hand-in-hand.

In Frauenfeld, the team are more than happy with the Unimog U 423. The Special Truck doesn't just offer a first-class, pleasantly modern workplace, thanks to some expert training, it's also easy to use in spite of the complex technology it harbours. The so-called Visual Safety, or the safety markings on the vehicle, ensure that the Unimog is easily visible to other road users, even in bad weather. The cantonal civil engineering agency Thurgau also sees further advantages in the Mercedes-Benz ex-works warranty of up to three years or 4000 operating hours. This also serves to facilitate planning whilst guaranteeing transparency of costs.

Another advantage which is not to be underestimated is the company's proximity to the long-standing LARAG AG company in Wil – the first company in all of Switzerland to have been issued with the "UnimogPartner by Mercedes-Benz" quality accolade. As a Unimog Partner, LARAG AG fulfils the high demands on quality, sales, service and technology which Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks expects of its bodybuilders in the preparation of individual body solutions.

The local sales and service outlet of LARAG AG impressed the cantonal civil engineering agency with excellent collaboration from the outset: "From their advice to the offer creation, right up as far as the invoicing and maintenance, everything worked extremely well. LARAG AG earns out respect for their competence, extraordinary service offering and the fact that they deliver exactly what we need," summarises Daniel Goldinger.
