Bremen’s disaster relief service puts a U 5023 into service.
The firefighters of the Bremen-Lesumbrok Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrated a very special new addition: A brand-new Unimog U 5023 from the Bremen disaster relief service has recently been stationed there. The highly off-road-capable vehicle, featuring a so-called crew cab for six emergency personnel and a long wheelbase, was commissioned as part of the civil protection equipment modernization initiative and assigned to the Bremen Fire Service.
Lessons from the floods.
Alexander Hanke, Civil Protection Officer for Bremen, explains the decision behind the new Unimog: "The procurement of the vehicle was driven in part by the experiences gained during the flooding events of 2023 and 2024 in Bremen. "Other major incidents — including the flooding in southern Germany and, for example, the devastating flood disaster in the Ahr Valley — also underscored the need for Bremen’s civil protection authorities to procure a dedicated high-wading vehicle of their own." As the authority responsible for civil protection, the Senator for the Interior and Sport procured this specialised vehicle as part of the ongoing resource planning aimed at strengthening Bremen’s disaster response capabilities.
Built for rough terrain.
The Unimog will support civil protection operations primarily in a logistics role, with a particular focus on transporting people from difficult terrain or flooded areas. With a wading depth of 1.25 metres, the vehicle significantly enhances Bremen’s civil protection capabilities and makes an important contribution to managing incidents in precisely these demanding scenarios.
