With a special roll cage and additional adhesive labels, emergency hammer and extended model plate, the Unimog meets the registration requirements of EU Directive 167/2013 for vehicle class T1b. Equipment

Transmissions.

The Unimog implement carrier is a real grafter.  The range of transmission variants is tailored to the wide range of possible applications and different customer requirements. The basic gearbox can be extended to up to 24 forwards and 22 or 24 reverse gears. The permanent all-wheel drive with limited-slip differential has the option of having an added hydrostatic traction drive or a converter-clutch unit. With the truck's synchronised reversing group (EQR), a quick h=change of direction and rocking free are no problem.

The range of transmission variants is as diverse as the Unimog itself. The driving speeds can be precisely, conveniently and flexibly adjusted to suit different working or driving situations.

The speeds depend on the selected tyres and the engine speed. The above figures are based on the U 400 with standard 315/80 R22.5 tyres at an engine speed of 2,200 rpm. 89 km/h limit.

EasyDrive (hydrostatic traction drive):

The new hydrostat drive consists of a hydrostat transmission flanged onto the main transmission, hydrostat adjustable pump and a hydrostat adjustable motor. The system allows fully hydrostatic driving up to 50 km/h. The working speed is infinitely adjustable to the respective application at a constant engine and PTO speed. Switchover to manual drive is possible at any time. The increase in output is achieved by increasing the system pressure to 500 bar. For this purpose, special maintenance-free high-pressure pipes were developed.

AutomaticShift (EAS = electronically automated gearshift):

Two drive programmes help reduce the driver's workload: in automatic mode "A", the drive program handles gear changes and clutch operation completely by itself, regardless of load, accelerator position, engine operation, climbs/inclines or engine brake. However, if it becomes necessary for the driver to manually change gear using the multifunction lever, this is also possible. And the "M" drive programme (manual) offers complete control. Here, gear selection is also made using the multifunction lever. The driver chooses the gear, while clutch operation occurs automatically.

AutomaticShift (EAS) with dual-pedal operation (accelerator/brake) is available for the U 435 and U 535 models. The optimised gearshift tuning makes gear changes noticeably quicker and clutch wear and tear significantly reduced. This makes life easier for you, the driver, especially for gearshift-intensive vehicle tasks – so you can concentrate better on the surrounding traffic and on the task at hand.

Torque converter:

The torque converter clutch is designed for an engine power output of up to 170 kW and for a torque of 900 Nm. The converter provides the high start-off torque and the multi-disc clutch performs the shift function, such as for road/rail use. The operation of the lock-up clutch and shift clutch is automatically controlled by the engine management system. For this reason, there is no clutch pedal if the torque converter clutch has been installed.

The differential locks are activated intuitively using the central dial.

Portal axles with final reduction gear: great ground clearance but at the same time a low vehicle centre of gravity as axle tube and differential are located above the centre of the wheel and the differential is not in the centre of the axle.

The hydropneumatic suspension combines active and passive functions. When the engine is switched on, optimum stability of the vehicle and a fixed frame height are guaranteed, regardless of the load and load distribution. This significantly increases driving comfort, especially when one-sided loads are applied and when driving around corners.
