Anchor in the flood.

The Unimog proves to be a hero during the floods in Australia.

In New South Wales, Australia, six extreme off-road Unimog provide support during floods. The State Emergency Service (SES) relies on the Unimog U 4023 models as robust rescuers in times of need. With their extreme off-road capability, they are ideally suited for flood operations. The six Unimog U 4023 can now prove this in the face of the forces of nature.

Valuable rescue helpers.

Providing rapid assistance in the event of natural disasters – through evacuations, medical transports or logistical support for remote communities. There is a lot for the Unimog to do at the State Emergency Service, especially in terms of flood protection. The Unimog also assist in transporting fodder for remote livestock, or in search and rescue operations in the Australian bush. Three of the six newly acquired vehicles are already in use, helping where environmental disasters rage.

With the extreme off-road Unimog U 4023, SES volunteers can make their way through even the most difficult terrain. The rescue team does not have to compromise on payload: the double cab holds up to six passengers, and the flatbeds also carry heavy equipment that is essential for disaster relief.

Andrew Assimo, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Australia Pacific Director, is very enthusiastic about the new vehicles: “The SES does very valuable work for our region. Therefore, it is particularly rewardig that they have chosen the Unimog U 4023 for such an important task,” he says. “We know that the unique capabilities of the Unimog will support SES crews in helping people in extreme situations.”

Keeping its head above water.

The Unimog can handle extreme situations: with its fording depth of 1200 mm, the robust Unimog U 4023 is the perfect “rescue swimmer” for the SES task forces. An anchor that won't sink. It has unique portal axles that create extra clearance under the vehicle to help tackle challenging terrain.

Getting stuck is not an option for the Unimog: equipped with an all-wheel drive and differential locks at the front and rear, it will shovel its way out of muddy ground if necessary. The tyre pressure of the massive 365/85 tyres in 20-inch format can be adjusted depending on the condition of the ground. Rescue teams can easily control it via the Tyre Pressure Control System. Independent coil springs on all four wheels provide flexible manoeuvrability when entangled on uneven terrain.

The strong sensitive type.

For precise movement over difficult terrain, the Unimog U 4023 has a transmission with transfer case. It allows a total of 16 forward and 14 reverse gears, and thus offers the right gear for every situation. What's more: it can be operated fully automatically.

The driver also has a special fold-out clutch pedal at his disposal. At low speeds or on slippery surfaces, it can help with a more delicate control of the clutch. The OM 934 four-cylinder turbo diesel engine provides the Unimog with the necessary power for a dynamic start during emergency operations. It delivers 231 hp (170 kW) and 900 Nm of torque, and at the same time complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard.

You can count on the Unimog U 4023.

The SES Unimog were initially equipped with standard platforms so that they could be put into action as quickly as possible. The top priority for the SES is rescuing people from dangerous situations and providing logistical support to isolated communities – the standard platform is sufficient for both scenarios.

Further upgrades for the units are in the pipeline, for example the fitting of a crane. And a special flood rescue module that includes an inflatable lifeboat and other special features for flood operations. The State Emergency Service uses the standard hydraulic pump of the Unimog U 4023 for cranes and hydraulic winches at both ends of the vehicle. The equipment can be quickly attached using the hydraulic quick-couplers at the front and rear when time is of the essence.

In areas exposed to flooding, the Unimog U 4023 always has the upper hand. Thanks to its excellent off-road capabilities and its versatile upgrade options, it is a trustworthy all-rounder. The New South Wales SES rescue forces can rely on it. Like a stable anchor in the flood.
